Passenger Ship and Fishing Vessel Collide Near Lucena City Pier

CALABARZON – A passenger ship and a fishing vessel collided around 7:00 AM near the pier of Lucena City in Quezon Province last Thursday.

According to Commodore Geronimo Tuvilla, commander of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Southern Tagalog, MV Peñafrancia VI of Starhorse Shipping Lines had just departed from the Port of Talao-Talao in Lucena when it collided head-on with the incoming fishing vessel FV Sr. Fernando 2.

MV Peñafrancia VI was en route to Balanacan Port in Marinduque carrying 18 crew members and 82 passengers, while the fishing vessel, carrying 16 crew members, was approaching the pier from Tayabas Bay.

No one was injured among the crew and passengers, but both vessels sustained damage.

Based on the PCG’s assessment, MV Peñafrancia VI sustained damage to its ramp and starboard bow, while FV Sr. Fernando 2 suffered damage to its forward bow. Both vessels were able to safely return to the Lucena pier.

Tuvilla assured the public that there is no threat of an oil spill resulting from the collision.

The PCG Southern Tagalog has also recommended to MARINA the cancellation of the safety certificates of both vessels.

Meanwhile, the passengers of MV Peñafrancia VI were transferred to another ship, MV Peñafrancia IX, which departed for Marinduque at around 12:25 PM.
